Fond Doux Plantation & Resort, St Lucia

Fond Doux Plantation & Resort

Nestled in the heart of St Lucia, Fond Doux Plantation & Resort is an eco-friendly colonial plantation which dates back to the 19th century and best known for romantic, intimate and private cottages. The resort is situated within a 250 year old working plantation and is located in Soufriere just minutes away from some of the island’s main attractions, including The Sulphur Springs, and also the island’s international airport.

The property offers a destination experience, allowing you to immerse in your surroundings, engage in local culture and feel part of history. Guests are able to actively engage in the day-to-day running of cocoa plantation – Cocoa Harvesting, Cocoa Drying, Cocoa Grinding, Cocoa Dancing and Cocoa Rolling.

You gain a true appreciation for the finished chocolate product! In fact when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall made their official tour of Fond Doux in March 2008, they had a go themselves. It is no wonder that the Guardian Newspaper has rated the resort Number 2 Plantation Retreat in the world.

Fond Doux Plantation & Resort features an assortment of 15 uniquely crafted cottages which are set amongst lush tropical gardens to create a romantic and secluded slice of natural holiday heaven. Cottages are the product of carefully restored French colonial wooden buildings, more than 100 years old, which were slated for demolition.

All accommodation is one or two bedrooms, Queen or King size beds, and set within the vibrant rainforest to offer both privacy and a sense of being at one with nature. There are 6 one-bedroom cottages which are perfectly-suited for couples looking for a romantic and secluded retreat. The two-two-bedroom cottages are ideal for families or friends who are travelling together and wish to have their own private stand-alone cottage with plenty of space to relax on island time.

The property’s deluxe one-bedroom cottage is a 160-year old colonial house which was relocated to Fond Doux Estate from Castries, rebuilt and beautifully restored to reflect Caribbean architecture with authentic French colonial touches. It offers two levels and includes a dining room and outdoor kitchen. Prince Charles visited this cottage as part of his official tour in 2008.

There are 6 stand-alone honeymoon suites which exude romance, complete with outdoor rainforest shower and private plunge pool.

The organic Mama Terre (Mother Earth) spa uses local and natural products as revitalizing and rejuvenating ingredients in all treatments – coconut oil, organic fruit-and-spice potions, and mud from the nearby sulphur springs and the cocoa fermentary.

The Jardin Cacao Restaurant is based on a ‘plantation-to-plate’ theme whereby the chefs draw upon Caribbean and French influences to create local masterpieces using fresh fruits, vegetables and local spices harvested daily from their organic farms.

A tour of Fond Doux Plantation & Resort takes you on a journey of kings, chocolate, organic fruits and vegetables and birdlife – see the beginning of the chocolate making process, almond, nutmeg and cocoa trees, hummingbirds and a variety of flowers including pagoda and white star jasmine.
